Job description

The Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Beijingis accredited to Vietnam, Laos, North Korea and Cambodia is seeking the services of a highly qualified person for the job of Research Assistant/ Translator/Interpreter.

This position in the Embassy provides high quality Chinese-English translation and interpretation, and other duties including facilitating meetings and visits, and monitoring and research, with a focus on matters set out in the description.

Application

Interested applicants should be nationals of China and between 25-50 years of age.

Applicants must provide a written application in English addressing their claims against the selection criteria, including specific examples of experience. Applications should be no more than three pages in length. In addition, a covering letter and CV should be provided. Telephone and email contact details should be provided for three referees.

Selection criteria (applicants must address all the selection criteria)

1. Minimum Bachelor"s degree in Political Affairs, business English and/or liberal arts, and/or Mass Communication, International Relations. Additionally,he/she should possess professional translator or interpreter credentials from recognized institutions.

2. Work experience in a similar position and undertaken interpreting, translating, computer and typing skills significant drafting, reporting, and note-taking responsibilities will be added advantage.

3. Proven high-level ability to interpret Chinese-English discussion in official meetings and other contexts.

4. Demonstrated high-level ability to translate documents between Chinese and English, and the ability to prepare high quality correspondence in both languages.

5. Proven ability to monitor, undertake research and provide advice, including a sound knowledge of the Chinese government system.

6. Strong ability to arrange and facilitate official meetings and visit programs.

7. Sound judgement and proven ability to work under pressure, to determine priorities, meet tight deadlines, and achieve results with limited direction

8. Proven ability to contribute effectively as a member of a small team, to develop and maintain effective professional relationships, and representational skills.

9. An excellent knowledge of the fundamental techniques of consecutive interpretation is required.

10. Knowledge of Chinese economic, social and educational structures, history, and culture is required.

11. Skills of the Microsoft Office (computer excel, outlook and internet for research is essential.

12. A basic knowledge of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Protocol procedures and correspondence instructions is highly recommended. General knowledge about bilateral relations between Uganda and China will be an added advantage

Duty statement

1. Undertake Chinese-English interpreting and translation.

2. Prepare and follow-up on official correspondence.

3. Undertake specific research and analysis tasks and provide advice thereon.

4. Seek official meetings and arrange and facilitate visit programs.

5. Represent the Embassy at meetings, seminars, functions and other events.

6. Initiate and follow up correspondence.

7. Undertake other duties as required.

8. Develop and maintain professional contacts to facilitate the above duties.
